Gravel Calculator FAQ
For a standard driveway, calculate length × width × depth (typically 4-6 inches). For example, a 20ft × 10ft driveway at 4 inches deep requires approximately 2.5 cubic yards (about 3.5 tons) of gravel.
Crushed stone (3/4 inch) is ideal for driveways as it compacts well and provides excellent stability. Crushed granite also works well. Avoid smooth river rock as it doesn't compact properly for vehicle traffic.
Depth depends on application: Driveways need 4-6 inches, walkways 2-4 inches, drainage systems 6-12 inches. Always add a waste factor of 5-10% for compaction and uneven surfaces.
Multiply volume (cubic meters) by material density (kg/m³). For example: 2 m³ of crushed stone (1680 kg/m³) = 3,360 kg or 3.36 tons. Different gravel types have different densities.
Weight varies by material: Crushed stone weighs about 2,700-3,000 lbs per cubic yard, pea gravel weighs 2,400-2,600 lbs per yard, and river rock weighs 2,600-2,800 lbs per yard.
